Water
Like most residences in this area the Chalet relies on rainwater as its main water supply. The water is drinkable straight from the tap. Although it is a big tank, it may run low in summer if guests are careless. Please be reasonable and conserve water. If the power goes off, then the pump will not work and there will be no water until power is restored; we always have a couple of litres of bottled water in the fridge just in case.
Power
The power sometimes goes off without warning, usually as the result of a storm or heavy storm. The local authorities are pretty responsive when this occurs and it is very rare for the power to be off for any longer than a couple of hours. Interim cooking can be done on the woodburner or BBQ on the deck.
Heating
The main method of heating in the chalet is the woodburner in the lounge. There will be wood and kindling in the woodbox when you arrive; once this has been used up there is more in the woodshed out back + a small axe in case you need to chop some more kindling.
There are firestarters in the kitchen, above the microwave. Place one cube in the firebox, ensuring that the damper lever is all the way out, and light it. Arrange some of the supplied kindling on the burning fire starter, add firewood once the fire takes off. Once it is going, it only takes a few minutes to heat the chalet and then it can be comfortably turned down. The fan upstairs will push warm air back down to the ground floor.
If the fire is going and is too hot or too cold adjust heat by moving the lever left to slow burn or out fully for high burn. BEFORE opening the fire door, make sure the lever is completely out and wait 20 seconds before opening the door or smoke may come out into the room.
