Groceries
The closest supermarkets are the New Worlds in Taumarunui, Turangi, and Ohakune. Their hours are normally 7am to 7pm. During the ski season, the ‘Kune one is ALWAYS packed after the fields close for the day.
If you have just arrived and plan to pick up some bits and pieces at the local 4 Square (07-8922-879) then you need to get there before 7pm as it will close then and does not re-open until 7-30am. This applies to petrol also as the 4 Square is also the local GAS service station.
It sells petrol, groceries, warm hats, gloves etc, rents out videos and DVDs, and has an ATM. The local Postshop is next door in the cafe.
Fuel
TAUMARUNUI IS THE CLOSEST 24HR STATION, 39KM AWAY.
Off licenses
The National Park Hotel has an off license and there are bottle stores in Taumarunui, Ohakune and Turangi.
Rubbish
There is a rubbish bin under the kitchen sink. Please separate out recyles (tins, bottles, plastic etc) and rinse. Recycles can be dropped off at the National Park Transfer Station at anytime: take the first right after the 80kmh sign (going south) and follow the road across the railway line to the transfer station.
Any vegetable rubbish can be easily disposed of by simply throwing it over the fence to the goats – they will be your friends forever if you do! Similarly the chicken over the back of the water tank will appreciate any bread scraps.
Hygiene items
THE TOILET WILL BLOCK if you flush tampons or pads. If this happens – your plumbing bill will be very expensive. There are small pieces of newspaper in the 3rd draw of the bathroom dresser. Please wrap the item and put it in the rubbish bin by the towel rail.
